Switching MDM providers is a big decision. For many organizations, the hardest part isn’t choosing where to land – it’s figuring out how to get there with minimal disruptions to their team.  When those conversations come up, Jamf’s MDM Migration Checklist is worth having on hand. A little structure up front goes a long way.

Pre-migration: Plan before you move

Migrations can run into trouble when the groundwork wasn’t solid going in. This phase covers the fundamentals – inventorying devices, apps, policies and configurations, assessing risk and determining compliance needs. Workflows get built and tested in a dedicated environment before anything in production gets touched. There’s a contingency plan step, because no matter how well you’ve prepared, the production environment doesn’t always cooperate.

Migration: Move devices without moving chaos

This is where the pre-migration work gets put to use. IT sets up the destination environment to achieve functional parity with what was in place before, then validates it with a small pilot group using real devices. From there it’s the full rollout – unenrolling devices from the source MDM and enrolling them in the destination. The checklist covers several approaches, so IT can choose the path that makes the most sense for their environment.

Post-migration: Verify, validate, and document

This phase is about confirming the migration actually succeeded, not just that it was completed. That means validating enrollment, checking device compliance against organizational baselines, cleaning up the source MDM – removing accounts, permissions, integrations and scripts that are no longer needed. It’s also when IT gathers feedback, documents lessons learned, and checks outcomes against the goals set in pre-migration.
